CHARACTER EDUCATION VALUES IN AESOP'S FABLES (GREEK) AND MINANGKABAU (INDONESIAN) FABLES FOLKTALES: A COMPARATIVE LITERATURE STUDY

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the character education value of fable folktales from two different regions by using the perspective of comparative literature studies. The objects of this research are Greek fable folktales composed by Aesop and Minangkabau (Indonesian) fable folktales. This type of research is a comparative literature research with qualitative descriptive method. The data in this research are character education values that can be found in the structure of fable folktales from the two countries mentioned above. The source of data in this research is the book collection of folklore Fables Aesop Series 2 (Benedicta Hanna) and the book collection of folklore fables Anthology Series fables Nusantara (KKLP Literary Development Agency Language Development and Guidance). The data used in this study were obtained using the listening method with the cata technique, consisting of seven folktales of Aesop's fables of Greek origin and fifteen Indonesian fables of Minangkabau origin. Aesop's fables, which have roots in the Greek literary tradition, emphasize individual strength, cooperation, and integrity through simple yet meaningful stories. On the other hand, Minangkabau fables display more contextual characteristics, presenting character education values in the daily life situations of Minangkabau people in West Sumatra.
