Analysis Of the Novel Gadis Kretek by Ratih Kumala: A Sociological Study of Literature

A novel is a type of imaginative work of the author that is equipped with the reality of conflicts that can affect the course of the story (Sumaryanto, 2019: 39). Literary works, especially novels, have conflicts in their storytelling to provide a different atmosphere when reading them. Of course, the conflict is taken from real events that occur in society coupled with the author's imagination. This study aims to describe the social conflicts in the novel Gadis Kretek by Ratih Kumala using a literary sociology approach. This research uses a descriptive qualitative research approach. In collecting data, the researcher uses the literature study method and documentation by listening to the reading object in the form of a novel, and then making notes obtained from the reading data. The results of the study found social conflict which is divided into 3 parts, namely the form, cause, and impact of social conflict in the novel Gadis Kretek by Ratih Kumala.
